ICT Freedom & Constraint

Masters level - 30 credits

Do you find the possibilities offered by new technologies in schools exciting and frustrating in turn? Take control of the situation by analysing why this happens in this module.

This module aims to develop in students a critical framework for evaluating new developments in computer technology and their potential impact on formal and informal education in order to better react to the claims made by salesmen and better separate the "hope from the hype".

Issues explored, drawing from fifteen years of ULTRALAB’s own research and development as well as other developments worldwide in real-world action research contexts, include:

  • Past developments & dead ends
  • Technology developments
  • Alternative futures
  • Technology limits
  • Human limits
  • The time-scale of technology change
  • The way institutions and individuals react to technology change
  • Case studies of innovation
